Trade show blitz brings soaring exports

Mainland China--Ceramics exports from Dehua County in Fujian province have soared by 40 percent in the past 12 months, with the majority of products being sold to neighboring Southeast Asian nations.

Manufacturers say one of the reasons for increased exports is the high number of trade fairs they have attended in places such as New York, Cairo, Frankfurt and Cape Town.

Ceramics from Dehua are made from resolvable porcelain, which is said to be more eco-friendly than other types.

One resolvable ceramic called "dolomite" is fired at 1040 Celsius, giving it brighter underglaze colors.

Other products include non-infiltrated terracotta and rare-earth ceramic items. Most of them are western-style arts and crafts that are exported to Europe and the United States.

The export value of "eco-friendly" ceramic products is one-third of the total export value of ceramic products from Dehua County.

Manufacturer gets US export permit

Mainland China--Shiwan Ceramic Fty No.1 Co., Ltd has obtained a certification issued by the Chinese State Commodity Inspection Bureau allowing it to export its daily-use ceramic products to the United States.

Products include banquet pots, congee (rice porridge) pots and teapots bearing the Qunyi brand. The export document certifies that their lead and cadmium content meets the standard prescribed by the US Food and Drug Administration for daily-use ceramic products.

To qualify for the certification, the company set up a series of lead and cadmium management systems from designing to packing, especially in testing new products.

Established in 1956 and ISO9002-certified, Shiwan Ceramic also manufactures a variety of ceramic tiles for the construction industry on a five-hectare area in Shiwan town, Foshan city, Guangdong province.

A local I/E company handles its exports while it awaits approval of its application for independent import and export rights, said export manager Liang Hao-tian. Main markets are Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, the United States and Europe.
